Opinion: Credibility is the key at Trump trial
  + stars: | 2024-05-19 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +21 min
The idea that Cohen talked to Trump about Daniels on that call “was a lie,” Blanche alleged. Moreover, my experience has been that juries don’t decide based upon one moment — they base their judgment on an overall view.”There were allegedly three parties aware of the scheme to conceal the real reason Trump paid Cohen more than $400,000 in supposed legal fees: Trump, Cohen and Allen Weisselberg, then-chief financial officer of the Trump Organization. “Weisselberg could be the linchpin to validate Cohen’s claims about Trump agreeing to reimburse him through Trump Organization, as a business expense,” wrote attorney Stacy Schneider. Trump seems to be tempted to go mano a mano and show that he is better fit to be commander-in-chief. The new requirement for GOP politicians wanting to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump seems to be visiting the Manhattan courthouse where he’s on trial.

The federal IOU is now at $34.5 trillion, or about $11 trillion higher than where it stood in March 2020. Concern over such eye-popping numbers had been largely confined to partisan rancor on Capitol Hill as well as from watchdogs like the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Uncharted territory for debt and deficitsIndeed, the CBO numbers are ominous, as they outline the likely path of debt and deficits. Surging budget deficits have been driving the debt, and the CBO only expects that to get worse. "The huge obvious problem is that the U.S. federal debt is now on a completely unsustainable long-term trajectory," analysts at Wolfe Research said in a recent note.

Copper "is the most compelling trade I have ever seen," Carlyle's Jeff Currie said on the Odd Lots podcast. He thinks the metal's massive mismatch in supply and demand could push its price up to $15,000 a ton. He later added: "I just quote many of our clients and other market participants say it's the highest conviction trade they've ever seen." Though not necessarily part of his acronym, artificial intelligence is also amplifying industry demand, Currie mentioned.

The trick to getting ahead at work isn't being the fastest learner or the smartest in the room — it's having a positive attitude, says Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Jassy, who took the top job at Amazon after Jeff Bezos stepped down in 2021, shared his "best career advice" in a new interview with LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky. "I think an embarrassing amount of how well you do, particularly in your 20s, has to do with attitude," Jassy, 56, said. Having a positive attitude means you work well on a team and honor deadlines, among other strengths. Regardless of where you're at in your career, having a positive attitude can help you build stronger relationships in the workplace.

New research this week is adding fresh detail to one of paleontology’s biggest questions: Did dinosaur blood run hot or cold? Clues from fossilized eggshells and bones have now suggested that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded and others were not. Reinhard Dirscherl/ullstein bild/Getty ImagesMarine scientists have used artificial intelligence to decode previously unknown complexity in the calls of sperm whales. The whales produced a catalog of clicking sounds, which the researchers described as akin to a “phonetic alphabet” for sperm whales. What sperm whales are saying with their clicks remains a mystery to human ears, but understanding the scope of their vocal exchanges is an important step toward linking their calls with specific behavior.

Washington (Reuters) — The United States has barred imports from 26 Chinese cotton traders or warehouse facilities on Thursday as part of its effort to eliminate goods made with the forced labor of Uyghur minorities from the US supply chain. US officials believe Chinese authorities have established labor camps for Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups in China’s western Xinjiang region. “The so-called ‘Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act’ is just an instrument of a few US politicians to disrupt stability in Xinjiang and contain China’s development,” the spokesperson said. Washington has restricted imports from 65 entities since the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List law was passed in 2021, according to the department. “We enthusiastically endorse DHS’s action today to nearly double the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act’s ‘Entity List’ — while recognizing that the current list remains only a fraction of the businesses complicit in forced labor,” Representative Chris Smith and Senator Jeff Merkley, chairs of the bipartisan Congressional-Executive Commission on China, said in a statement.

New York CNN —The Donald Trump hush money trial is dragging reporters into uncomfortable territory and laying bare the complicated relationships journalists often have with sources. Michael Cohen, who continued to testify Thursday, invoked from the stand the names of several high-profile media figures, putting their relationships with the former Trump fixer in the spotlight. Cohen named The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and MSNBC’s Katy Tur as reporters which he had established relationships with. And he spoke about having recorded dozens of phone calls with media figures, including former CNN boss Jeff Zucker. That reporters are playing a starring role in the trial is also a function of the Trump years.

A top Wall Street analyst's stellar endorsement of TJX Companies makes us want to buy more shares of the discount retailer. Matt Boss of JPMorgan — Jim Cramer's favorite retail analyst — said Friday that several off-price retailers, including Ross Stores , Burlington Stores , and Club holding TJX, were buys. One possible catalyst for TJX stock is the company's quarterly earnings report this coming Wednesday before the opening bell. Part of the reason is also the growing appeal in off-price retailers and discounters as consumers in higher and higher income brackets seek value. "I continue to think that Costco is the stock to buy off of Walmart," Jim said Thursday.

I can’t watch a basketball game on TV without seeing ads urging me to place a bet on one app or another. I can’t walk down the street in New York City without seeing ads about the latest lottery jackpot. And when I sit at my desk in the office, I spend hours studying another type of betting — trading in financial markets, where you can place wagers on companies, bonds, commodities and derivatives of all descriptions. Yet the most consequential betting of all — wagers on elections in the United States — may soon be shut down by regulators. And the commission’s proposed new rule would give it the power to block trading on a broad range of other subjects.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on May 16, 2024. Passing major milestones like the 40,000 barrier the Dow Jones Industrial Average eclipsed this week makes for a nice headline, but market experts don't take much else from the move. Forty thousand "is a great milestone, but [at the] end of the day there isn't much difference between 39,999 and 40k," said Ryan Detrick, chief market market strategist at Carson Group. But the "Waiting for Godot" economic retrenchment never happened, despite wobbly corporate profits and other headwinds. Those factors outweighed queasiness over where the Federal Reserve was headed with monetary policy amid inflation that has proved surprisingly sticky.

How to buy a put spread on the Nasdaq as a portfolio hedge

I want to focus on the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) tracking the Nasdaq 100 as the majority of this year's gains in the S & P 500 are derived from Magnificent 7 constituents. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has more beta than the S & P 500 and has the potential to increase rewards if this downside protective trade pays off. This trade is looking for roughly a 5% pullback to cover the cost of owning this put spread. The Trade Bought the 6/28/24 $437 put for $3.50 Sold the 6/28/2024 $420 put for $1.45 Total cost of this debit spread is $2.05 or $205 per one lot spread In the event the Nasdaq 100 continues to make new all-time highs, this spread will expire worthless But hopefully the Nasdaq 100 exposure you have in your portfolio will more than cover the cost of this hedge. Information about Wednesday's critical consumer price index release circulated early on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, according to a statement from the agency. The statement provided few details but noted that the Labor Department agency has notified the Office of Management and Budget and the department's Office of the Inspector General. There was no other information provided concerning the early release of the CPI, a key inflation indicator that showed another increase in April, though slightly less than what the Wall Street consensus had anticipated. ET release, though there was little unusual activity in the half-hour prior, indicating that the early release was not widely seen and did not materially impact trading.
